Head has long had a following among the narrow-footed, who loved the fit of its old N 97 (97 mm across the forefoot). Now it's making boots that are more successful across a broader range of foot shapes, but the discontinued 97 was missed last year. It's back. The new RS 96 is even a shade narrower, and in keeping with that close fit, it's one of the raciest boots in the AME category. The flex is not for the meek, and its responsiveness is what you'd expect from a race boot. Testers-especially our ex-racers-liked it for high speed and hard-snow applications, but unless you've got the weight to flex it, it might need softening for soft snow and uneven terrain. "Loved it on the groomers," says Monahan. "Very aggressive and edgy."
