Pro Tecnica's similarly priced Magma and Race Pro (below) are like dueling Old West gunslingers. The Pro is the rugged outlaw, all grit and spit. The Magma's the dandy sheriff, oozing high-tech features, including a tri-density shell, Rapid Access swinging-door cuff and endless flex and fit adjustments. The women gave it much higher marks than the men, who liked the Magma but generally preferred the Pro. Laundon skied both and said of the Magma, "Very impressive. Just as responsive as the Pro but more comfortable. It takes direction well and goes just about anywhere." Reigle liked the Magma's wrapping ability. "It closes around the foot with no pressure points." And Sheinberg almost ran out of adjectives. "It's smooth, snug, attentive and energetic. The epitome of what a boot in this category should be." Con Cuff is low for tall skiers. Top Scores Closure System 3.8, Steering Power 3.7, Skiing Comfort 3.6
