Some wayfarers claim it's all about the journey. They probably haven't navigated an eight-foot ski bag from car to curb to counter or lifted a lumpy duffel the size of a Volkswagen. On flights, these people carry on books, not boots. In short, they probably aren't skiers.

Traveling to ski resorts with a full load of equipment has always been an ornery proposition. With increased airport security and now-marathon check-in lines, it will be even more awkward this season. But there's a way to bypass the entire schlepping process: Send your skis and boots ahead of you, so they'll be waiting at your condo door.

Sports Express, a Durango, Colorado, shipping company, will pick up your gear from your home and deliver it to your winter destination -- all for around 40 bucks from the East Coast to Colorado (rates vary). Get an online quote, reserve at least 10 days in advance, and skip the game of baggage-claim roulette. (800-357-4174, sportsexpress.com)
