Getting There Turner Mountain Ski Area is located 22 miles north of Libby, Mont., on Pipe Creek Road. Libby is serviced by Amtrak, and commercial flights are available into Kalispell/Whitefish, Mont. (90 miles east) and Spokane, Wash. (165 miles west).

Lodging The Tamarac Lodge (406-295-4880) and the Yaak River Lodge (406-295-5463) are 12 and 15 miles north, respectively. Libby also has a number of motels.

Eats On-mountain options are limited to a small cafeteria. Stop for pizza and beer at the Red Dog Saloon, halfway between the mountain and town.

Drinks "We don't have lattes," Anderson says.

Locals' Advice Tickets are offered in exchange for a shift at the mid-mountain lift shack. Work two hours for a full-day, one for a half.
