LAKE LOUISE, Alberta (USST Press Release)—Leanne Smith (Conway, NH), who was 23rd in her World Cup debut one day earlier, raced into her first top-20 Sunday, finishing 19th in a super G. Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) led U.S. women in 11th place while Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) crashed on the upper section of the run.

Fans can watch the race on WCSN.com.

Martina Schild of Switzerland covered the 1.86K course in 1:16.21 to edge Germany's Maria Riesch by 0.2 seconds.

Mancuso finished in 1:17.32 and Smith, the defending NorAm overall and super G champion, started 45th and stormed home in 1:17.62. Olympian Libby Ludlow (Bellevue, WA), coming back from knee surgery, was 26th in the flat light and 10-degree weather.

"It was a really good day for Smith. She was charging all the way," DH/SG Head Coach Alex Hoedlmoser said. "She was listening to course reports and then she executed. It's always good to see that kind of response."

He said visibility was tricky because of the overcast sky and flat light. "Jules (Mancuso) would have had a better result, for sure, but when she skied (17th) she had really bad light and she couldn't even see the ground through the first seven or eight gates," he explained.

Vonn crashed into the safety netting when she lost an edge on her skis as she came into the first jump. She was not seriously injured, Hoedlmoser said, and skied down the course to the finish.

The women's tour heads next to Colorado for the Audi Aspen Winternational, including the first women's downhill in Aspen in 20 years.
