Avalanche

After dozens of seasons on the slopes, taking the same runs year after year, you’ve finally decided it’s time to try something new: the backcountry. Chances are you’re thinking about new territory, new challenges, fresh tracks.... What you probably aren’t thinking about is avalanches. The people at Arapahoe Basin and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center are hoping to change that.

A-Basin will be hosting its eighth annual Beacon Bowl and Avalanche Awareness Day Saturday, February 6, 2010, an event which will benefit the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. The Beacon Bowl is an event developed by A-Basin’s ski patrol to teach and test skills for the backcountry, and to raise awareness about the dangers of avalanches.

The day will include the Beacon Bowl, an avalanche transceiver competition, various avalanche-related demonstrations and clinics, a raffle and silent auction, and après ski party. Registration will be at A-Basin on the day of the event. A $20 registration fee for the Beacon Bowl will be donated to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) and will include a raffle ticket, a beverage and a slice of pizza at the après ski party.

The Beacon Bowl and Avalanche Awareness Day is the perfect way to truly prepare yourself for whatever the backcountry may offer. After all, not even the best helmet in the world can protect you from an avalanche.
