Summer Resorts: Steamboat h 0501

Summer fun in Steamboat is measured in vertical feet hiked, miles of trails biked and whitewater paddled. The big question here is not what to do, but how to do it all. If you're an adrenaline junkie, that is. If not, Steamboat's mellower pleasures are found casting for trout in the Yampa River, playing daily rounds at one of three local courses-two of championship caliber-or taking in the views from the deck atop gondola-served Mt. Werner. From up here, the Yampa Valley, its river, lakes and green expanses of ranchland entice you to explore the region. Pack water and hiking boots or bring a bike, so you can romp on the mountain's vast network of well-maintained trails. After a 2,200-foot descent, there's no better way to rinse off the trail dust than an afternoon float down the Yampa.

Come evening, head downtown to the ProRodeo, where you can load up on barbecue and a taste of local ranching tradition. Or stay at Mt. Werner for a Strings in the Mountains concert. You pick the pace, and Steamboat will take care of the rest.

DON'T MISS The 98th annual Cowboy Roundup Days (July 4), including a parade, fireworks and rodeo.
