Killington, Vt.

Call it the Patty Duke Show of the mountains. In winter, Killington is the wild cousin, partying till dawn and tossing in events and ski runs to shock you with delight. Come summer, though, Killington is the sweet Patty, offering visitors a giant bear hug of fun. From the first of the seven resort peaks to the last, rising up a total of 4,241 spectacular vertical feet, Killington offers a summer's worth of activity.

With 36 holes of championship mountain golf and a tennis program of national acclaim, you can fine-tune your summer sport of choice. Or take to the mountain, where the lift whisks you to mountain biking and hiking on the greenest to the gnarliest of Killington ski trails (bragging rights go to those who master Superstar).

Once you've pushed your body as far as it will go, retire to the more passive activities at the Adventure Center and let the kids run wild. Water and alpine slides, a bungee, mini-golf and a skate park will keep them entertained for hours. Toss in lakes for swimming, national parks for exploring, great shopping, heavenly spas, more great restaurants than you can sample in one trip and a wide variety of slopeside lodging that keeps everything within a few steps, and you'll find you're in love with that sweet Patty. That's fine¿the wild cousin doesn't mind. She knows you're hers come winter. ¿M.M.
