Lazing on the lawn might be as ambitious as you'll get at Rainbow Ranch Lodge in Big Sky, Mont. But then, it is a spectacular lawn, sweeping the length of the property and edged by the mighty Gallatin River on whose banks

A River Runs Through It

was filmed. Located 10 miles north of Yellowstone National Park and 5 miles east of Big Sky Ski Resort, the stately, lodgepole pine lodge is a showcase of river-rock fireplaces, leather sofas, antler chandeliers and Western art. The 21 mountain-elegant guest rooms offer little luxuries such as Jacuzzis and fireplaces. Should the spirit move you, saddle up with neighboring Diamond K Outfitters for a scenic trail ride, hit the links at the Big Sky Golf Course, or go whitewater rafting on the mighty Gallatin.

Afterward, reserve a table on the lodge's restaurant deck and watch the moon rise. Chef Phillip S. Boswell will pamper your palate with exquisite dishes such as potato-crusted rainbow trout with portobella cornbread pudding, roasted quail stuffed with andouille sausage (a throwback to Boswell's New Orleans roots), and mesquite-smoked, roasted chicken with toasted pine nut risotto. Pair them with one of 400 selections from Patrick Hurd's Wine Spectator award list.

Rates range from $130-$230.
