Snowbasin's website
No surprise: It's January in Utah, and it dumped two feet last night. Want freshies? In Little Cottonwood Canyon, you'll have until lunchtime. At Snowbasin, the better part of three days. With nearly 3,000 feet of vertical, 2,820 "always good somewhere acres, and zero crowds, Snowbasin serves up Utah skiing without all the fuss. Add world-class Lifts (No. 1), great Grooming (No. 17), impressive Terrain Variety (No. 18) and long, consistently pitched runs, and you've got one helluva secret stash. Whether cruising Main Street or gold-medaling down the 2002 Olympic downhill course, "you'll ski more vertical in a day than at Jackson, by far, claims one reader. The 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics transformed a ski area of poky lifts and double-wides was transformed into a modern resort with a tram and palatial "country-club-grade lodges. ("Best men's restrooms in the West, a relieved reader says.) So where is everyone? Truth is: "If you want amenities or après-ski, choose another destination. Snowbasin lacks the nonski extras: no slopeside lodging, no quaint base village. In fact, there's barely an après-ski scene, never mind nightlife. Translation: "If they ever build lodging, this place will be one of the best. Conclusion (for now): Perfect day trip, but after refueling at Huntsville's Shooting Star Saloon, it's back to Park City (60 minutes). —Gabby Anstey McDonald
