Park City, Utah (Jan. 28) AP - Double Olympic medalist Bode Miller and defending Super G champion Daron Rahlves were among 17 skiers picked Monday for the U.S. team for the alpine World Championships beginning Sunday in Switzerland.
Miller, who won two Olympic silver medals a year ago, is the first U.S. man to lead the World Cup standings in 20 years. He has won two races this season, giving him six victories in two years.
Rahlves won the Hahnenkamm downhill Saturday in Kitzbuehel, Austria, and another downhill Dec. 29 in Bormio, Italy. In 2001, he won the Super G gold medal at the World Championships in St. Anton.
The U.S. team was named based on results in international races.
The men are Miller, Franconia, N.H.; Rahlves, Sugar Bowl, Calif.; Jake Fiala, Frisco, Colo.; Chip Knight, Stowe, Vt.; Tom Rothrock, Cashmere, Wash.; Erik Schlopy, Park City, Utah; Dane Spencer, Boise, Idaho; Marco Sullivan, Squaw Valley, Calif.; and Thomas Vonn, Newburgh, N.Y.
The women are Kirsten Clark, Raymond, Maine; Kristina Koznick, Burnsville, Minn.; Caroline Lalive, Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Libby Ludlow, Bellevue, Wash.; Julia Mancuso, Olympic Valley, Calif.; Jonna Mendes, Heavenly, Calif.; Sarah Schleper, Vail, Colo.; and Resi Stiegler, Jackson Hole, Wyo.
