The Red Parka Pub

As a bar, it's famous¿some would even say infamous¿with its thick impasto of ski memorabilia (including some chairlift seating) and nearly three decades' worth of fond, if somewhat fuzzy, memories. As a restaurant, it would seem an iffier proposition: I've learned the hard way to beware North Country "barbecue" (boiling in ketchup does not qualify). But the Red Parka's ribs are outstanding (no wonder they refuse to divulge their secret sauce). They're also priced for a ski bum's budget, at $15 a pound. Equally substantial, the Red Parka's Indian pudding ($4) does well by the Yankee classic. The serving staff is friendly and relaxed (you half expect them to call you "hon"), and if it's an intimate tête a tête you're after, opt for the "skiboose"¿a quiet annex, which in a former life used to clear snow from Maine Central's railroad tracks.

Pane E Salute

En route to Killington¿or on the way back home¿we invariably make a point of stopping in at Pane e Salute, a small café that injects a bit of New York City cool into the tidy village of Woodstock. It's a bit of a culture shock, stepping throught the door from quintessential Vermont (the birthplace of lift-served skiing is just outside town) to this corner of Soho. Nothing too outre, mind you: some abstract paintings, a lending library of trendy magazines, and¿most importatn, either for takeout or to be enjoyed on-site atop a scattering of tables covered in butcher paper¿the real thing when it comes to rustic Italian cusine. All the staples are here¿well-priced and wonderful¿from toothsome panini and luscious lasagna ($5-$6) to an assortment of artisanal breads (usually a baker's dozen) and all those subtle, brittle cookies, including artful biscotti. Don't bother debating whether to scarf up now or stock up for later: Do both, as we've learned to do, coming and going.
