VITAL STATS

Skiable terrain: about 400 acres, 72 trails; seven lifts (2 triples, 3 doubles, 2 handle-tows). Lift tickets: $38 adult; $26 child (6-12); $26 senior (65-plus); kids 5-and-younger ski free. There are substantial discounts if you purchase online.

GETTING THERE

From the south, head north on Interstate 51. Take exit 190 west one mile to Granite Peak. Granite is four hours from Chicago, three hours from Milwaukee.

SLEEPING IN

DINING OUT

Check out Dave's Tavern on the Square (715-842-1478) in Wausau's Washington Square for casual pub fare (and free peanuts in the shell) or the Hereford & Hops (715-849-3700) for grill-your-own steaks and family-style dinners.

Slide down to Chalet Lounge in the basement of the Granite Peak chalet for local brews and live music.

WHAT'S NEW

21 trails and a triple chairlift on the western side of Granite Peak; a $1 million addition to the historic Chalet, a 10,000-square-foot food service chalet; snowtubing slope with handle-tow.

A GOOD DEAL

Kids 12 and younger ski free when mom and dad buy a two-day (or more) lift ticket. One child per paying adult.
