Johnson's Condition Still Critical

Kalispell, MT, Mar. 23, 2001--Olympic champion Bill Johnson remained in extremely critical condition Friday afternoon, but his family remained hopeful as critical time passed by with his condition remaining stable. Johnson was critically injured in a ski racing crash at The Big Mountain Thursday during the Chevy Truck U.S. Alpine Championships.

"We're encouraged but also know that the doctor's have told us that it's just a matter of time and God," said DB Johnson,Bill's mother.

"We are all very optimistic," said brother Wally Johnson. "He's a strong, tough guy and if anyone can make it through this,it's him."

Johnson underwent surgery Thursday for severe head trauma. Doctors at Kalispell Regional Medical Center have told thefamily that the 24-48 hours after the accident are the most critical.

The Kalispell hospital became a gather spot for the Johnson family, including Bill's ex-wife Gina and sons Tyler (6) andNicholas (9).

Officials were hopeful his condition would remain stable through the critical 24-48 hour period following the accident.
