Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Feb. 18, 2001--World Cup overall leader Janica Kostelic of Croatia, who has been bulletproof in World Cup slaloms this season, won her eighth in a row Sunday, taking the victory in 40-degree weather when Anja Paerson of Sweden, the first-run leader and newly crowned as world SL champion, fell on her final run.

Kostelic, unbeaten in World Cup slaloms but a bitterly disappointed DNF in slalom at the World Championships earlier this month in Austria, had been just one-hundredth of a second behind Paerson in the first run. She finished with a total time of 1:19.96, nearly a full second ahead of Christelle Saioni of France (1:20.94). Third place went to Karin Koellerer of Austria in 1:21.07.

Sarah Schleper led three U.S. finishers. She was 15th in the first run, which made her the No. 1 skier on the second leg of the race, but she ran into problems and finished 14th. Her time was 1:22.68. In addition, Kristina Koznick (Burnsville, MN) was 23rd and newcomer Julia Mancusco (Tahoe City, CA) - who gained her first World Cup points last month in super G - finished 26th.

The women's tour heads to Lenzerheide, Switzerland, for a downhill and super G Feb. 24-25 before World Cup Finals March 7-11 in Are, Sweden.
