Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, Dec. 22--Slalom specialist Didier Plaschy of Switzerland, who was ready to retire three years ago before residents of his hometown convinced him to continue, led the first run of a World Cup slalom Tuesday and held on to edge Austrian Benjamin Raich by .09.

Plaschy, whose first win came last month at Beaver Creek, Colo., had a two-run time of 1:40.39 with Raich second in 1:40.48. Third place went to defending World Cup SL champ Thomas Stangassinger, another Austrian, who finished in 1:41.13. Kristin Bjornsson of Iceland came out of 28th place after the first run to finish fourth (1:41.30).

Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) was the lone American to reach the second run, but he failed to finish. Sacha Gros (Vail, CO) failed to make the top-30 cut.

The men's side of the Cafe de Colombia Alpine World Cup completes its pre-Christmas schedule Wednesday with a giant slalom in Saalbach, Austria - a makeup of the GS which was weathered out 10 days earlier in Val d'Isere, France.
