“A company can’t create soul, the skiers at Alta create the soul, something that draws people from all over to come play in the best and deepest snow in the Wasatch. It is such a wonderful community, but it doesn’t have much night- life or lodging options.” - SKI Magazine Reader

Alta is for skiers, literally. The ski-only resort is focused on the authentic ski experience and knows where its strengths lie. (We’ll give you a clue: one of them is light, fluffy, and white.) Some readers even dubbed it the “best snow on earth,” no doubt thanks to what another reader describes as “powder, powder, powder.” Without the Disneyland feel of big-box corporate resorts, Alta leaves visitors wishing for more nightlife and off-mountain activities—but let’s get real. You go to Alta to ski from first chair to last light. Everything else is secondary. Charm runs high at Alta, where the aesthetic, and even some lodges (like the famous Sitzmark), have remained largely unchanged since the resort’s inception in the 1940s. Readers have a love-hate relationship with the vintage-ski-town atmosphere—more than one craving updates—but ultimately give in to the love. “A grand old lady who does not disappoint!” Every skier should visit Alta for “the classic ski experience” at least once.

On-Hill Eats

We’ll spare you the details about how amazing the fare is at Collins Grill and leave it at this: the Heart of Darkness Cupcake. Trust us, it’s worth every calorie.

Mandatory Run

Ski the AltaSnowbird Connect via Keyhole or Mineral Basin and take in the giant scale of Little Cottonwood Canyon's high peaks.

Pick-Me-Up

Ski to Alta Java at the Albion base for a Susie’s Special (dirty chai, extra espresso, extra love, and semi-secret ingredients) before taking another Highboy lap.

Signature Experiences

- Alta's iconic Highboy run (officially called Alf's High Rustler) is T2B—top-to-bar, that is—meaning you can ski the advanced, ungroomed run all the way to the deck at Goldminer's Daughter.

- The Sitzmark Club for a nightcap—the vintage swagger will leave you with a new appreciation for the classic watering hole.
