There’s no denying Squaw’s bona fides for steep thrills, but a proposed mega-expansion of base-area residences has stoked controversy among locals who fear “their” resort is becoming too corporate. When it snows, Squaw is unbeatable. Its acquisition of neighboring Alpine Meadows means visitors can explore two resorts with distinct flavors on one ticket. Squaw and Alpine are connected by shuttles for now, but plans for a scenic base-to-base gondola over famed KT-22 are in the works. “Build the gondola,” says one reader who knows that growth is inevitable—and not necessarily a bad thing.
