Beer for Skiers (sort of): Melvin Brewing's Stay Tuned MPA

Sure, it might be promoting a snowboarding movie, but two-plankers should still get down on this pale ale.

Let's face it: Brands are making some pretty cool stuff "for snowboarding" right now. From the Skullcandy Icon revival to the super rad Blackstrap balaclavas, it's safe to say that the people going down the hill sideways are producing some objectively sweet stuff. What's even better is that they are making products that skiers can enjoy, too.

It's time to add one more product to your list of "snowboard products that are really rad:" Melvin Brewing's "Stay Tuned" Pale Ale. The hop-loving brewmasters at Melvin Brewing, located in northwestern Wyoming, collaborated with Absinthe Films to create a beer that celebrates a new snowboard film of the same name.

Let's get one thing straight before you start spewing angry comments: It's only beer. It's a pretty gosh darn good one at that. But if you've gotten this far and you feel an uncontrollable urge to post a non-sarcastic comment about "knuckle-dragging, tattooed, spinach-chinned, lunch tray riding, no good, in-my-way booger-eaters," then take a deep breath, count to ten, and remember that skiers, snowboarders, monoskiers and snowbladers all are just people having fun outside, sliding on snow, and taking part in an activity that's way better than sitting on a couch watching other people play video games.

Cool? Cool. Glad we got that out of the way.

About the beer: The Stay Tuned Melvin Pale Ale (MPA) provides more evidence that the guys at Melvin have mastered the art of brewing beers that express hops better than any craft brewery east of Escondido. They didn't name which specific hop varieties they used in the "layered hop" recipe of Stay Tuned, but the copper malt mellows any acidic tones to make for a smooth, well-rounded and resilient hoppy beer with stone fruit notes on the tongue. It's a hoppy but not bitter, delightful pale ale that goes down easier than an IPA but still provides a pleasant buzz for watching any snowsports movie.

So go find a six-pack of Stay Tuned, plug in your VCR, and enjoy this delicious brew while watching some classics from back-in-the-day. Better yet, invite over a snowboarder friend and watch a ski movie and a snowboard movie back-to-back while splitting a sixer of Melvin. Chances are, both will get you pumped to go outside and slide around on snow.
