Clark, McBeath Win FIS Downhill Races at US Nationals


Jackson Hole, WY, Mar. 23--Defending U.S. champion Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) prepped Thursday for the start of the Chevy Truck U.S. Alpine Championships by winning a FIS-level downhill by four-hundredths of a second over promising teen racerLindsey Kildow (Vail, CO). Canadian Darin McBeath won the men's race by .02 over teammate Kevin Wert.

Clark, who won her first U.S. downhill title at Jackson Hole two years ago, was timed in 1:12.72 with Kildow clocked in 1:12.76.Third place went to April Mancuso (Tahoe City, CA) with a time of 1:13.11.

Pre-race co-favorite Alison Powers (Winter Park, CO), completing the best international season of her young career, crashed inmid-race when her head smacked a gate on the upper half of the course. It was not immediately known if she would competeFriday in the U.S. downhill race.

McBeath had a winning time of 1:07.29 with Wert clocked in 1:07.31. Jakub Fiala (Breckenridge, CO), the newly crowned Nor Amoverall champion, took third place in 1:07.47.

The Chevy Truck title races begin Friday with men's and women's DHs. The men's super G will be Saturday at Jackson Hole Resortand the women's SG Sunday. Top prize money for the U.S. championships is $3,000 for first place.
