Claiming two feet of snow at 8,900 feet and an additional four feet of snow at the summit, Mammoth Mountain, California,starts spinning lifts on Friday, October 16. Broadway express will be open 8:30 to 4 and will access Broadway, Forest Trail, Mambo, St. Moritz, and Main Park, including jibs and rails. Skiing this Friday will be free, says Mammoth’s Howard Pickett. “We are so excited to start the season nearly four weeks ahead of schedule and to be able to reward our guests with a free day on the slopes,” he says.
Thirteen days ahead of the normal Halloween opener, Sunday River, Maine, also offered free skiing this afternoon. Today lifts ran until 3:30 and tomorrow will be open from 9 to 3:30 and through the weekend. Only the upper portion of Locke Mountain is open, but more runs may open this weekend if colder temperatures persist. Starting tomorrow you can purchase tickets for $25 at the Barker Base Lodge.
