Beer for Skiers: Dogfish Head Slightly Mighty Lo-Cal IPA

No, it’s not “local” IPA or "lower California" IPA, it’s just low calorie and delicious.

Sometimes “light” beers get a bad rap. They seem to be watered down and missing the extra calories that provide full-bodied flavor. Or they are made with filler instead of proper beer ingredients that just don’t add up to a properly crafted, full flavor—and full calorie—pint from a nearby brewery.

Dogfish Head hopes to change that with their new Slightly Mighty “Lo-Cal” Session IPA. Brewed with aromatic hop varietals, the Slightly Mighty could go toe-to-toe with many other session IPAs on the market in terms of flavor quality, but with only 95 calories and a 4% ABV, you can enjoy this brew relatively guilt-free without sacrificing the beloved flavor zing of hops.

The tropical notes from the hops are accented by monk fruit extract, a zero-calorie addition that allows the brewery to use less calorie-dense malt. The monk fruit’s natural sweetness evens out the overly bitter and tangy hop flavors, meaning you can drink more and gain less weight. A great way to stay relatively in-shape until the ski areas open up again? Check.

Granted, with only 30 IBUs, the true hop-heads might defer to Dogfish Head’s renown 60- or 90-minute IPAs, and good for them. If you drink Slightly Mighty while your ski buddies pound the heavier hoppy ales, you’ll likely wallop your full IPA-drinkin’ friends in any physical activity, off-season or not.

Want to give Slightly Mighty a try, but also Dogfish Head’s very enjoyable Belgian Witbier, Session Sour, and Super Gose? Seek out their Off-Centered Activity Box, which features three of each style—12 beers total—in a water-resistant cardboard container that holds ice like a champ.

We enjoyed all the beers in the Activity Box during a BBQ with friends, but we’re particularly impressed by the general utility of the Activity Box full of snow after a fun day of summer skiing in the high alpine. With the Fourth of July holiday coming up and tons of snow in the high country, you might as well try both.

Besides Slightly Mighty, the Namaste White is one of the better American witbiers I’ve had in a long time, and, according to Dogfish Head, the SeaQuench Ale is the best-selling sour beer in the USA right now. Find out if the Off-Centered Activity Box is near you.
