Watching skiing on YouTube with a beer in hand is a pretty common thing for skiers. In some circles, it’s considered to be the best thing that isn’t actually skiing. And when the quality of a beer matches the quality of skiing that’s being viewed, a magical thing happens that can only be described as pure bliss.

This happened to me recently while I was rewatching Candide Thovex’s latest video, “A Bit of Skiing,” while sipping on Dogfish Head’s Hazy-O! IPA. I had seen the video and tried the beer previously, however, the conjunction of the two was a crazy combination of smoothness.

The beer puts a unique spin on the nearly identical and somewhat generic hazy IPAs that breweries all over North America are currently rolling out. In addition to being perfectly hoppy, Hazy-O! is brewed with three different types of oats and oat milk from New York’s Elmhurst 1925. The result is a beer so smooth out of the can, it’s almost like it’s being poured from a nitro tap.

To answer your burning question: No, the beer doesn’t taste like something in an oatmeal packet. Instead, the oats and oat milk add an incredibly smooth mouthfeel that highlights flavors from the dry-hopping process. At first, the beer almost tastes bitter before doing a U-turn and rewarding the tongue with delicious and hoppy citrus and tropical fruit notes.

“Each of the oat formats used in Hazy-O! provides a unique characteristic to the beer,” says Dogfish Head Founder and Brewer Sam Calagione in a press release. “The malted oats offer a delicate malty sweetness; the rolled oats contribute a dense haze; the naked oats provide a subtle toasty, caramel character; and the piece de resistance, oat milk, creates a silky soft mouthfeel that makes Hazy-O! drink like a 5-percent ABV session sipper, instead of the 7.1-percent ABV powerhouse that it is.”

When Hazy-O! is combined with the skiing of Candide Thovex, well, the word “smooth” doesn’t do justice. The guy can literally straightline moguls without moving his upper body, and takes double backflips to flat like he never left the ground. While you’ll never ski like Candide, he sure is fun to watch with a tasty, smooth beer.
