Pancakes and skiing go together like rope drops and a powder day: The two don’t always align, but when they do, you know you’re in for a good day.
One ski area knows this and takes skiing and pancakes to the next level by serving up “Powder Pancakes” any time it snows more than 8 inches. Aspen Snowmass serves up a free stack on the hill so you can get first tracks and then grab a plate for the next lift ride up.
But what if there was a way to ski all day and get breakfast for après? That way, skiers could have a pancake affair and not miss out on any precious powder turns at all.
If, like me, you’re on team “Breakfast for Après,” Colorado’s Oskar Blues Brewery has the ultimate solution: Death By Flapjacks.
An English Porter brewed with maple syrup, vanilla, lemon peel, nutmeg, lactose, and other natural flavors, Death by Flapjacks is made to be enjoyed with a short stack slathered in butter and syrup. And unlike many of the novelty beers and pastry stouts in the craft beer world, this brew isn’t overly sweet. Instead, Death by Flapjacks is designed to be enjoyed with breakfast, breakfast-for-lunch, breakfast-for-dinner, breakfast-for-après, and just about anytime you want pancakes.
“Brewing a pancake beer makes it all the more socially acceptable for me to never turn down a beer with breakfast when it’s offered,” says Juice Drapeau, head brewer for Oskar Blues Brewery, in a press release. “The lactose and maple combination makes Death By Flapjacks a completely unique drinking experience, great for early mornings and late nights, or when late nights become early mornings.”

When sampling at the SKI office, editor Jenny Wiegand was quick to point out that, following a very maple syrup-forward nose, Death by Flapjacks is surprisingly bitter in the mouth. That bitterness, along with notes of vanilla and nutmeg, is followed by a lemon-essence cleanse on the finish, making the Death By Flapjacks experience more like a maple crèpe rather than a super fluffy American breakfast sugar bomb.
In other words, if you really want to get the full effect of this beer, drink Death by Flapjacks with pancakes, crèpes, flapjacks, and even Honey Stinger Short Stacks. Pretty much anything with real maple sugar will bring out that much more flavor in this very unique English Porter.
Also, why are there no French toast sticks on après menus? There’s a free million-dollar idea for ski areas everywhere.
