Red Lodge Mountain in Montana will close a week early this year due to very low snow. The mountain has received less than a third of the snow it usually gets this year.

While other parts of Montana, Utah, Colorado, and even California have seen a couple big dumps in the last two weeks, RLM has stayed dry and warm since the beginning of February.

Although the mountain was able to rely on snowmaking to keep terrain open through the first half of the season, the warm temperatures during the past six weeks have ruled out the possibility of making additional snow.

“The premature end of the season is a disappointment to the staff, but the closing weekend will be full of activities. On Saturday, the mountain will host the annual Mini Monster Rail Jam, as well as Silver Run’s White Stag Race. Easter Sunday will include a sunrise service, breakfast, and egg hunts for both children and adults,” said RLM’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Jeff Carroll.

The mountain will close on Sunday, March 27.

Lessons Learned from Montana Avalanche

A recent avalanche ripped Bridger Bowl, Montana's slack country to the ground. We spoke with Eric Knoff, an avy forecaster at the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, about the fact that tracks don't mean a slope is safe (there were over 200 tracks on the face that slid). This slide was skier triggered, but nobody was caught by the slide. Special thanks to the GNFAC for the photos.
