To make pure alcohol, start with a batch of raw ingredients. Distill it, and you’ll get a more refined batch. This is how we compiled this best-of-the-year photo gallery. We started with thousands of images. Gradually we selected the shots that illustrate skiing and photography in new and different ways, along with an explanation from each photographer. Please enjoy responsibly. Then we asked you, our readers, to vote for your favorite image. Introducing the Readers' Choice award for Best Photo of the Year.
Winter isn't finished with us yet. Just about every state in the West has been getting hammered by this latest storm. We got out to sample the goods at Monarch, Colorado today. With 6 inches reported and much more deposited by the wind it was a great day to be storm riding in Colorado. Make sure you get out this weekend somewhere and get some.
Washington D.C. may get upwards of 28 inches of snow this weekend, with a massive storm nailing the Mid-Eastern Seaboard from Pennsylvania to Virgina. People are calling it a "snowpocalypse" and clearing the shelves at their grocery stores in preparation. The good news for skiers? There will be powder at Snowshoe, West Virginia. We spoke to Snowshoe's spokesperson for tips on getting there this weekend.
RIMBY. It’s an obscure acronym that evolved from another, better-known acronym, NIMBY, which stands for “not in my backyard.” RIMBY stands for “right in my backyard.” You might call the photographers whose images follow “rimbies.” They’re the envy of us all—skiers who live and work in proximity to kickass skiing. Here they show us those yards in pictures. If you feel like sharing your backyard stash, email us a photo to email@example.com.
