The North American Outdoor Institute (NAOI) and Matchstick Productions are teaming up to promote avalanche awareness on the

Claim

movie tour. NAOI is a non-profit organization based in Valdez, Alaska dedicated to promoting avalanche education and certification through various presentations and courses. Legendary extreme skier Dean Cummings, NAOI Instructor and owner/operator of H2O Guides, will be traveling with the

Claim

tour to answer questions about avalanche safety and education.

“People go to the movie to get excited about skiing,” NOAI’s Executive Director Debra McGhan said. “They should go to an avalanche awareness class to learn what they need to do so they can experience something similar safely. Dean recognizes that the large part of people don’t see the behind the scenes of how the athletes do extreme things in a safe way.”

In conjunction with the tour, Cummings will also be doing “Be Snow Smart” presentations in the towns and cities the tour stops in. “Be Snow Smart” is a free interactive avalanche awareness course that teaches how to navigate avalanche terrain safely, the causes of avalanches, and how to avoid them. “In Alaska we have seen a positive impact of the “Be Snow Smart” presentations,” McGhan said. “We wanted to share them with people who get excited about extreme skiing.”
