Portillo Unchanged

Welcome to Portillo, Chile, where gringos trade flip-flops for ski boots, racers and freeriders mingle, and pisco flows like carménère. The vibe is unabashedly old-school, and Portillo’s diehards wouldn’t have it any other way.

Red Bull Illume On Exhibit Tour

Red Bull Illume, a multi-sport, action photo contest, is on a nation-wide tour to exhibit photos from the most recent contest. Chris Burkard, an American photographer who shot surfer Pete Mendria off the coast of Chile, were among the winners and their photos are currently displayed at the Denver Performing Arts Center. Here's a taste of the rest of the photos.

When was the last time you were in a room packed full of more than a thousand people, on their feet, cheering for a photo of a skier neck deep in snow? Or a patroller chucking a bomb over her shoulder? Me? Maybe never. Until last weekend. In the online world, where a new-hotness helmet cam edit drops every 15 seconds, it’s easy to forget how powerful one photograph, or even a series of stills can be. If you needed to be reminded of that, last weekend’s Deep Winter Photo Challenge, put on by Arc’teryx and Whistler Blackcomb, might have been the ticket.
