#2: Alta/Snowbird, Utah

After nearly two weeks without significant snowfall we are finally going to see a decent dose of the freshies for the northern mountains of Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and the Sierra Nevada. The winds will be from the West significantly favoring the Northern mountains such as Snowbird, Alta, Steamboat, Vail, and Beaver Creek. Amounts will be in the 8-12 inch range with a duration of 12-hour light density snow to freshen things up. Two to four inches fell in some spots of Utah's Wasatch Range today as well as the Sierra Nevada today so hopefully this storm will shape things up under those nasty layers that have kept me off the slopes. The time to chase is now and my favorite picks for amounts are both Alta/Snowbird in Utah and either Beaver Creek or Steamboat in Colorado. Here are the details:

Tuesday Night- Light snow flurries possible in the Wasatch

Wednesday- AM light snow in the Wasatch, moderate snow for the Sierra Nevada and Tetons

Wednesday PM- Heavy snow in the Wasatch (Best Dumpage from 1 pm to 7 pm) 4-9 inches. Light snow in the Colorado Mountains turns moderate by 4 pm.

Wednesday Night-(After the lifts close) Moderate snow continues in the Wasatch (Another 3-5 inches) with heavy snow in the northern Colorado mountains (5-10 inches).

Thursday-Light snow might linger along the Divide in Colorado, snow ending in the Wasatch and Tetons.

Friday-snow showers possible

The Hillbilly Haute Route

Who can afford to ski the real Haute Route during a recession? What we need is a domestic version, a tour connecting, say, nine ski areas in Colorado. It’s out there for any mountain yokel willing to hoist a heavy pack, bribe snowmobilers, and break trail where trails aren’t meant to be broken. It starts in luxury and ends with nearly rotten mayonnaise—conditions permitting.
