Proof That All You Need to Extend Your Ski Season is a Bike (And a Volcano)

What happens when three skiers decide to ride to and ski seven volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest? A whole lot of suffering and reward.

It seems like every skier is an avid bike rider as well. No matter what flavor of riding they prefer—road, gravel, trail, or enduro—most two-plankers prefer to pedal when they’re not skiing. The real savvy ones know you can ride bikes after skiing throughout the spring and early summer thanks to long days and warming temps.

Three skiers—Wyatt Roscoe, Charlie Hagan, and Andy Cochrane—took this concept to the extreme by putting together an entirely human-powered and self-supported mission to ride bikes to seven volcanoes in Northern California and Oregon. For each stop, the trio would climb and ski from the summit of each volcano when possible.

To make matters even more difficult, they followed a very strict Covid-19 regimen of not taking any food or help from anyone along the way. That meant that their bicycle trailers weighed 140 pounds each at the start of the adventure, and made the climbs nearly unbearable early on.

The three-week-long trip, documented in Stio’s new 28-minute long film “Rise and Grind,” taught the adventurers a number of lessons, like how there’s no such thing as too many calories and you never regret a swim. But perhaps the strongest lesson every skier, biker, and multi-sport lover can take away is that the group is more important than any single person in it.
