Sierra-at-Tahoe has been a park skier’s paradise for years, but it wasn’t until 2009, when the resort opened 320-acre Huckleberry Canyon, that the South Lake Tahoe ski area became popular among powder and backcountry enthusiasts too. Maybe that’s because Huckleberry offers fun cliff drops, chutes, open bowls, and pillow lines. And tons of snow. Last winter, Sierra-at-Tahoe got hammered with 763 inches. The mountain also offers free hourlong tours of Huckleberry’s terrain, $49 backcountry lessons, and backcountry gear rental. Plus, starting this winter, instead of bootpacking 20 to 45 minutes from the top of lift five, you can now catch a quick snowcat ride for a small fee to Huckleberry’s gates.
