Youngbloods: Steve 'Speedy' Day

"You have to stay out on the edge, because if you don't use it, you lose it." At 36, Speedy isn't in danger of losing it anytime soon. A lifelong Sierra skier¿he grew up skiing Boreal, the tiny Donner Summit area that produced world-champion speed skier Jeff Hamilton¿Speedy's found continual renewal by pushing his limits every day. "I'm still learning," he says. "This year I just skied the Box Chute for the first time." The Box Chute, by the way, is best described as a vertical wall. Though Speedy credits Squaw's endlessly challenging terrain for giving him room to grow, he's been on the Skiing 100 list twice now, and he'd be a standout skier on any mountain. "I'm into helicopters and ski grabs," he says, "but I gave up inverts when I was 22." Smart, too.
