Fischer Ranger 102 FR – 2022 Men’s All-Mountain Wide Ski Review

Note: Scores are listed above.

A number of testers seemed to believe that the Fischer Ranger 102 FR might be the ultimate one ski quiver option both for skiers in the West and even for some strong skiers in the East, especially those looking for some extra width but still wanting versatility. No matter where you ski, however, make sure you do some leg blasters getting ready for the ski season. “Feels burly,” says SKI Test Director Jon Jay. “But very stable at speed and eats crust with a voracious appetite.”

While some testers weren’t fans of the pink top sheets at the test (the ski is available in blue, for those not quite comfortable to ski on pink), nearly every tester was a fan of how the Fischer Ranger 102 FR feels in soft snow and away from the groomers. “Overall a fun ski,” says tester Dustin Cook. “Balanced and playful, pretty nimble, and forgiving enough. Fun on all conditions”

With a kicked tail that borderlines on twin-tip, the Fischer Ranger 102 has obvious freeride roots. However, the aeroshape design and carbon insert in the shovel mean that this ski is best when driven in a forward stance. In the sweet spot—which was easier for some testers to find compared to others—this ski can do it all. “There’s a great sweet spot once you get moving,” comments tester Bob Gleason. “You can pivot and smear with these, but you can also get high edge angles with strength.”

  • Strengths: Crud Performance (3rd in category), Flotation (4th)
  • Weaknesses: Forgiveness (14th), Playfulness (12th)

Fischer Ranger 102 FR – 2022 Women’s All-Mountain Wide Ski Review

Last year’s Best in Test ski didn’t quite bowl testers over this year, but that’s likely because testers were forced to spread the love in a highly competitive category this year.

That’s really the only way to explain the Ranger 102 FR’s lower rank, because our testers’ comments about this ski are all glowing. Ladies gushed about the ski’s pink topsheet, its easy handling despite the fatter waist, and above all, its versatility and stability underfoot.

See how it stacks up: The 12 best women’s all-mountain wide skis of 2022

“This ski does it all,” notes tester Courtney Harkins. “It bounces through bumps, hammers quick turns, and feels stable and solid while laying them over at high speeds.”

Despite a pretty modest waist width, the Fischer Ranger 102 FR tied for the top score in Flotation, with testers commenting that these planks ski wider than advertised.

“These won overall performance for me, ticking a lot of the boxes of being a powder ski with good float, and an all-mountain carver in the semi-fat 102mm-width. I trusted this ski to take me through all conditions with confidence. I’d be happy on this ski on a deep day, but also psyched to slay slush bumps and soft groomers.”

While ladies appreciated the Fischer Ranger 102 FR’s versatility, they did take marks off for its performance on hard snow, saying it just didn’t have the same edge hold as some of the narrower skis in the category.

“Liked them off-piste but they felt a little torsionally bendy on steep, hard terrain,” notes tester Marina Knight. But ladies considering this wider Ranger as their all-mountain ski probably don’t care too much about hard-snow performance, anyway. Those lucky enough to be able to consider a 102mm ski as their daily resort driver most likely get to ski soft snow more often than not, and for those ladies, the Fischer Ranger 102mm would make a great quiver-killer for the later part of the season.

Just make sure you have the muscle to swing these sticks around in more technical terrain. This ski is heavy, and doesn’t make skiing effortless. It’s not the most forgiving, so intermediates may want to steer clear. This ski is looking for an advanced skier and will reward excerpt skills twofold.

Says tester Erika Northrop: “This is a solid ski for exploring mountains. Great for ladies who want to ride something burly to drop into any terrain with no inhibitions.”

  • Strengths: Flotation (2nd in category), Stability at Speed (6th)
  • Weaknesses: Hard-Snow Integrity (9th), Quickness (8th)

Fischer’s new strategy of having no differences between men’s- and women’s-specific skis is most prevalent in the Ranger 102 FR: Every length up to 191cm is available in blue or pink. While the women loved this ski (Best in Test for Women’s All-Mountain Wide), the men at SKI Test found the longest length—191cm—to be more than a little burly. But, with a perfect mix of stability and ease of use, the 184cm length proved to be the belle of the ball.

STRENGTHS: Flotation, Stability at Speed

WEAKNESSES: Forgiveness, Playfulness

“Want to feel like a hero anywhere on the mountain? The Ranger 102 FR is for you,” wrote one tester. And she wasn’t the only one smitten with this ski—every one of our ladies loved this ski for its playful and powerful edge-to-edge transfer on groomers and its versatility everywhere else. A pink top sheet indicates this version is meant for the ladies, but it’s the same ski as the men’s and includes a Titanal binding plate, twin-tip profile, and carbon shovel. That said, ladies didn’t find it burly and instead praised its forgiving nature.
