2022 HEAD KORE 93

While the shape of the Head Kore 93 did not change much, the ski’s ingredients did change this year. Head removed the polyurethane honeycomb materials—known as KOROYD—and added a caruba-poplar blended wood core, an additional layer of carbon, and graphene elements. These changes should not have lowered this normally top-3 overall ski, but here we are. “The Kore 93 is predictable and smooth edge-to-edge with plenty of power on groomed terrain,” writes tester Jon Sexauer. “In variable snow, it’s a little work to keep them under you and on track.”

Head had a bad showing at SKI Test this year, and nowhere is that more prevalent than in this ski. Based on how this ski and the entire KORE line earned accolades and high marks in other tests, chances are high that there was something off with the way the ski was tuned and not necessarily the ski itself. Unfortunately, whatever the problem was, this ski didn’t shine in the SKI Test crew’s opinion. “Small GS ski-style hold and stability,” says tester Dustin Cook. “Unforgiving in variable snow and bumps, not playful at all.”

While this former category winner wasn’t quite up to snuff at Solitude, there is still plenty of joy to be found in it. The versatile all-mountain shape can hold its own on either side of North America, and the weight still caters well to resort skiers who want to dabble in backcountry skiing without sacrificing performance. “It responds quickly with facility,” notes tester Bob Gleason. “These have a dampness that is difficult to achieve in a lightweight construction.”

  • Strengths: Quickness/Maneuverability (14th in category), Forgiveness (10th)
  • Weaknesses: Crud Performance (19th), Flotation (17th)
