2022 Kästle FX86 Ti

By integrating beech with softer poplar through the middle of the ski, but leaving only poplar near the edges, Kästle took a bit of the sting out of the FX86 Ti skis. Built with two sheets of Titanal sandwiching the woodcore, full Powerzone sandwich sidewalls, and a Hollowtech 3.0 tip, these are still incredibly stiff skis. Testers felt comfortable on groomed terrain, but only the stronger, taller testers were able to handle them elsewhere. “Crushes groomers like a big mountain GS ski,” says legs-of-steel tester Nick Loomans. “Great balance of energy and stability for aggressive advanced/expert skiers or former racers.”

Beyond the stiffness factor, testers were happy to tear all of Solitude Mountain Resort’s corduroy to bits on the FX86 Ti. Not a single tester could find a speed limit on this ski, but at the same time, the planks needed to get up to speed to perform well. They also beg to be on edge, which means they demand strong, long-lasting legs. “Such a fun and stable piste ski,” notes tester Dustin Cook. “You can hammer them and they just give you all the love back.”

Skiers of the Kästle FX86 Ti are sure to become smitten with these Austrian blades, as fans of the brand tend to become repeat customers. And it’s OK to become one with the ski to harness the superpowers they provide. “I loved this ski,” gushes tester Todd Casey. “I skied so well, I felt like I was wearing a cape.”

  • Strengths: Hard-Snow Integrity (8th in category), Balance of Skills/Versatility (9th)
  • Weaknesses: Playfulness (17th), Forgiveness (16th)
