2022

Like the shadowy dog head with red laser eyes on the ski’s graphic, the Nordica Dobermann Spitfire 80 RB is a serious ski. Designed to bring some serious Austrian heat to a relatively wide-bodied carver, this ski loves speed and being on edge. But where it really shines is transitioning between turns thanks to a perfect mix of damp stability and energy. “Easy to initiate the turn with energetic exits,” says tester Jon Sexauer. “The ski also has enough platform to add versatility off-piste.”

While the race plate, two sheets of metal, and Nordica’s proprietary Performance Wood Core promise plenty of performance, the Dobermann Spitfire 80 RB also incorporates carbon inserts in the tip and tail which reduces the ski’s overall mass and optimizes swing weight. This reduction factor was controversial to some of the former racers at SKI Test, but the instructors and recreational skiers didn’t seem deterred. “Buckle up, buttercup: Let’s go fast,” notes tester Todd Casey. “This is a no-joke set-up with the race plate.”

The Nordica Dobermann Spitfire 80 RB earned the highest category scores in Crud Performance and Balance of Skills/Versatility. It’s certainly designed for experts or very strong advanced skiers, and those looking for versatile carving skis that can handle big speeds and imperfect snow need look no further. “The perfect all-mountain carver,” comments tester Luke Larsen. “Can handle some off-trail skiing without sacrificing its ability to leave trenches on the groomers. And the best part is you don’t have to be ex-World Cup to have fun on this ski.”

  • Strengths: Balance of Skills/Versatility (1st in category), Crud Performance (1st)
  • Weaknesses: Playfulness (5th), Forgiveness (8th)
