2022 Nordica Wild Belle DC 84

Coming in at No. 3 is the all-new Nordica Wild Belle DC 84. We know what you’re thinking—with an 84mm waist, the Wild Belle isn’t strictly a carving ski. But hear us out.

Even with a wider waist, the Wild Belle DC 84 tied for first in the Stability at Speed department and ranked third for its ability to grip on hardpack, proving this ski can clearly hold its own against the true carvers in this category. “This ski is actually pretty bomber considering how much wider it is than a true carving ski,” says tester Marina Knight. “This thing ripped it all up—big turns, small turns, it even carved in crud.”

Testers didn’t give it high scores in the Playfulness department, saying it felt a little burly and sluggish to exit out of turns. That’s probably Nordica’s new double wood core (DC) technology talking. This DC tech places two layers of poplar with beech wood stringers above and below a layer of rubber in the ski’s core. This makes the ski damp without having to use any metal, which tends to weigh a ski down.

The downside to the DC construction is that you don’t get the same snap and rebound you get from a traditional carving ski with metal. But testers were happy to overlook this one shortcoming because the Nordica Wild Belle DC 84 is such a smooth carver. Says tester Erika Northrop: “What a dream! Turns on the Wild Belle are like flying through the clouds and dancing on rainbows.”

The width of this ski makes it more versatile and approachable than a true carver, which means skiers still working on their carving skills may want to take a long, hard look at it. It’s a ski that will boost an intermediate skier’s confidence thanks to its stable and solid platform; it also has the potential to coach a skier to the next level. At the same time, it will still excite skiers who already know how to bend it like Shiffrin.

“These have no speed limit,” says tester Stephanie Humes. “Torsionally stable, big sweet spot, and so solid. I think a lot of women would love this ski and grow into it if they’re not yet quite ready for it.”

  • Strengths: Stability at Speed (tied for 1st in category), Hard-Snow Integrity (3rd)
  • Weaknesses: Playfulness (3rd), Crud Performance (3rd)
