2022 Salomon QST 106

When this iteration of the Salomon QST 106 premiered at the SKI Test in Taos two seasons ago, it placed in the top three in the All-Mountain Wide category. A fresh six inches of snow had fallen the night before, and the fluffy stuff really allows this fairly lightweight and completely metal-free ski to come alive. This year at Solitude Mountain Resort, the All-Mountain Wide skis were tested in refrozen two-day old leftovers and mostly “packed” powder. As the testers saw it, these are conditions where this ski doesn’t shine quite as brightly, especially when the testers have a need for speed.

But many of the comments note that the Salomon QST 106 is an ideal ski for all conditions at moderate speeds. The ski’s forgiving nature makes it an ideal choice for skiers who know their own speed limits but still want a poppy and playful ski. And when fresh snow does come, all skiers will find joy in the QST 106. “Way more capable than previously thought,” noted hard-charging young gun tester Otto Gibbons. “Holds decently in cut-up softer snow and can hold a carve well. Solid underfoot but doesn’t have to be skied hard to be enjoyed.”

The Salomon QST 106 uses cork in the tip and tail to damp vibrations and combines a light poplar wood core with a carbon and flax integrated laminate that runs from shovel to tail to give the ski liveliness. As each ski is about four and a half pounds, the skis are still the ideal mate for a SHIFT binding to create a resort set-up that can handle backcountry touring and variable snow with ease. After all, the backcountry seems to be the easiest place to find soft snow these days, and that’s where the QST 106 really shines. “As versatile as a Swiss Army knife,” notes tester Drew Crosby.

  • Strengths: Playfulness (3rd in category), Forgiveness (3rd)
  • Weaknesses: Stability at Speed (13th), Hard Snow Integrity (10th)

The unchanged QST 106 offered testers respite from the heavy metal hitters in this category, providing an excellent amount of playfulness and smear-ability in dynamic terrain. Thanks to a solid wood core construction, laminates of carbon/flax and basalt, plus a well-tailored tail rocker, the QST 106 is a joy to carve on, and enables skiers of all types to have it all. The QST 106 remains a solid wider option for a variety of skill levels and is light enough for the skin track.

STRENGTHS: Playfulness, Flotation

WEAKNESSES: Hard-Snow Integrity, Crud Performance
