2022 Stöckli Nela 88

As a brand, Stöckli dominated the women’s test this year, and their new Nela 88 was no exception, coming in as our runner-up in the All-Mountain category. Testers raved about this slightly narrower ski and called out its superior performance on groomers compared to the rest of the skis in this category. It comes as no surprise, then, that the Stöckli Nela 88 earned the highest scores in Hard-Snow Integrity and Stability at Speed.

But groomers aren’t the only place the Stöckli Nela 88 shines. Despite its narrower waist, this ski also impressed testers in crud, bumps, and everywhere else. With a big, 16.9-meter turning radius, it’s built for speed and wants skiers to point it down the fall line and let loose. At the same time, it’s still quick and maneuverable enough to help you out of tight spots thanks to its super light core and generous tip and tail rocker.

On that topic: Understanding the difference between rocker and camber ski technology

“So fun and playful in the crud and bumps,” notes tester Abby Ghent. “Wish they were longer, I think they would cut through snow piles better if they were. But I would recommend these to almost any skier.”

The length was the one universal criticism of the Stöckli Nela 88. The longest available length is 168cm, which is still too short for a lot of strong lady shredders out there. However, this shortcoming doesn’t change the fact that the Nela 88 is a high-performance all-mountain ski. Even in the shorter lengths, it still wowed testers with its stability and dependability in all terrain and in variable snow conditions, proving just how versatile it is. Says tester Stephanie Humes: “It’s a great ski of multiple personalities. Stable as anything at speed but fun and playful off-piste.”

If we had to list a weakness, it’s flotation—but who buys an 88mm ski for powder skiing? Testers also gave it lower scores in Forgiveness, but the Stöckli Nela 88 is still more accommodating than most others in this category. Given its versatility and balance of skills, the Nela 88 would make the perfect all-mountain crusher for intermediates and experts alike.

“An amazingly smooth ride that is still playful and energetic,” comments tester Tracy Gibbons. “This was my 21st ski of the day, and it made me feel like it was one of my first. Fresh, easy, and confidence-inspiring.”

  • Strengths: Stability at Speed (1st in category), Hard-Snow Integrity (1st)
  • Weaknesses: Flotation (14th), Forgiveness (3rd)

The narrowest ski in this category proved to have one of the biggest personalities. Testers gushed about the Nela 88’s responsiveness, a trait it comes by thanks to its Super Light Core and Stöckli’s Softflex and Solid Metal Edge Light technologies. It positively hums with energy and bounds from edge to edge on groomers, delighting the ex-racers among our test crew. Strong skiers will call the Nela 88 a versatile all-mountain ride that can tackle any terrain, but cruisier skiers may find this ski hard to command anywhere but on the ’roy. Says tester Georgie Bremner: “For the pro chasing the perfect turn.”
