Swiss brand Stöckli revised the entire Stormrider line this season, and many of the changes to the Stormrider 95 really impressed the SKI Testers at Solitude Mountain Resort. With more rocker in both the tip and the tail, the Stormrider 95 is less demanding on edge, which allows the ski to get through tight spots and off-piste situations more easily. But the ski still has a ton of race-bred horsepower that can drive on edge on groomed terrain with authority. “It has more gas pedal and balance than the other skis in this category,” gushes tester Mark Syrovatka. “With this ski I can carve a little harder and hop a little higher. At slow speeds or high speeds, this ski performs!”
Stöckli mates a lightweight, balsa wood core with two full sheets of Titanal in the Stormrider 95. The low-density wood combined with the metal certainly creates a solid feel on snow, regardless of snow conditions. The brand also added a new, freeride-specific, reduced-weight tip to the Stormrider 95, which helps optimize swing weight and adapt to variable snow. Add in a striking blue graphic printed directly on the top layer of Titanal, and this ski is practically a work of art. “They must inject the core with silk because this ski is so smooth!” jokes tester Luke Larsen. “So much fun and easier to ski than many would think. I would put a wide array of skiers on this ski.”
If the Stormrider 95 were a ski area, it would be the Yellowstone Club in Montana. This posh resort is a place known for wealthy people and surprisingly fun, expert-level terrain. Those two factors are a lot like the Stormrider 95: You have to be able to pay for them, but they are going to surprise you with the level of fun they can provide to good skiers. “So smooth, so stable, so easy to engage,” says tester Otto Gibbons. “Comfortable on groomers, bumps, chop, and everywhere else. Lively from edge to edge and fun to just cruise around on.”
