2022 Völkl Deacon 76 Master

With stiff tails and a notably damp performance, the Völkl Deacon 76 Master was appreciated by testers at Solitude like a complex wine. If you have the right palate, strong legs, and only want to carve on fresh corduroy all day long, this is an ideal ski. “Definitely a more aggressive ski that loves to turn and wants to be on edge at all times,” writes tester Dustin Cook. “They give so much energy back but are still nice and smooth at the end of the turn. All around great, but for advanced skiers, for sure.”

Go Deeper: The Best Carving Skis of the Year

With a medium-to-long turn radius, testers lauded the Deacon 76 Master’s willingness to change turn shapes and sizes when asked. The ski does demand a more aggressive driver, and it coaxed testers who ski with a more upright stance forward with authority. “These skis take no prisoners, but once you find the sweet spot, they are a joy to ride,” comments tester Mike Britt.

Völkl gives the Deacon 76 Master some major race-bred roots with a World Cup race plate, a World Cup ash wood core, and full Titanal laminates. But, the Tailored Carbon Tip and rocker in the tip and tail liven up the ski so mere mortals can enjoy it. Just as long as those mortals are very good skiers, that is.

“It always wants your attention,” comments tester Otto Gibbons. “To have nice turns you need to put in the effort.”

  • Strengths: Quickness/Maneuverability (3rd in category), Balance of Skills/Versatility (3rd)
  • Weaknesses: Forgiveness (10th), Crud Performance (5th)
