2022 Völkl M6 Mantra

Völkl unleashed the sixth generation of the iconic Mantra series at SKI Test to rave reviews. Comment cards were filled with words like “exceptional,” “limitless,” “solid,” and “ripping.” The M6 Mantra was particularly phenomenal on Solitude’s excellently groomed terrain, taking the top score in the category for Hard Snow Integrity and finishing in the top three for Stability at Speed and Overall Impression. “Exceptional grip and carving abilities,” says tester Drew Croby. “And can bust through crud.”

Go deeper: What’s the difference between the Völkl M5 Mantra and the new M6 Mantra?

The crud busting and carving skills of the Völkl M6 Mantra come from a stout construction. The multilayer wood core sits between a full sheet of Titanal below and Völkl’s all new Tailored Titanal Frame above. The “frame” aspect of the upper layer isn’t new; the previous generation also featured a tuning fork-shaped top layer that puts more metal over the edges and ends of the ski and less in the middle. The tailored aspect of the new version, however, modifies the amount of metal in the tuning forks based on the length of the ski. Shorter lengths have less metal overall, while longer lengths have more. This gives each length a more consistent flex and performance level made specifically for the size and strength of the user.

The M6 Mantra also features a Tailored Carbon Tip insert, which is the visible black line in the shovel. These woven carbon stringers provide the ski with liveliness in and out of turns, which many of the testers adored. But this tip insert doesn’t make the ski any more forgiving, a trait that testers felt the M6 Mantra lacked. For skiers who bring strong legs and their A-game to the hill every time they ski, the new Mantra is ready and waiting. “For big days with good legs,” notes tester Matt Schiller. “The ski was astoundingly powerful for its length.”

  • Strengths: Hard Snow Integrity (1st in category), Crud Performance (3rd)
  • Weaknesses: Flotation (7th), Forgiveness (12th)
