All-Mountain Wide Skis

The Best Women’s All-Mountain Wide Skis of 2022: Völkl Secret 102

The Völkl Secret 102 holds an edge and carves, even on hard snow, surprisingly well for a wide-waisted ski.

2022 Völkl Secret 102

The Secret gets a new look this season, but everything on the inside stays the same. That means the Secret 102 is still the all-mountain ripper our ladies have come to expect and love over the last two seasons.

This ski continues to be one of the top scorers in the Hard-Snow Integrity and Stability at Speed departments, which isn’t surprising considering how much Germans love speed and surgical precision.

Featuring Völkl’s Titanal Frame and multilayer wood core, this ski is one of the heavier and damper options on this list, which makes it a great choice for skiers who love to charge aggressively through crud and down the steeps. Every single tester called out the Secret 102’s unwavering confidence on and off the groomed and noted that this ski would make the perfect daily driver for a dedicated and aggressive resort skier.

While some out East may say that a 102mm ski doesn’t qualify as a daily driver, they’d be surprised by how well the Secret 102 holds an edge and carves, even on hard snow. “These rip on groomers and can play around in bumps, trees, and powder,” comments tester Lyndsay Strange.

The flip side to the stability coin is that the Secret 102 is not the liveliest ski in the category. Testers’ one gripe is that the Secret 102 is stiff and can feel a little planky and inflexible underfoot. “I wish I liked this ski more in off-piste terrain. It’s just a little too inflexible,” notes tester Marina Knight. “Of course, a Völkl is always going to ski well on groomers, and this is a very stable ski. I just wish it were more playful.”

Because the Secret 102 can feel somewhat unyielding at times, testers ranked it lower in Forgiveness and deemed it a ski best suited to advanced and expert skiers. Intermediates may enjoy a confidence-inspiring ride on the Secret 102, but they may also find that they’re a lot of work.

Long story short: If you gravitate toward a ski with a more playful or forgiving personality, you may want to consider the narrower Völkl Secret 96. But if you’re looking for something to help you cruise like you’re on the Autobahn, the Secret 102 was made for you. Says tester Erika Northrop: “Drive this ski fast and furious for a giggle fest on any terrain and in any conditions.”

  • Strengths: Stability at Speed (4th in category), Crud Performance (8th)
  • Weaknesses: Flotation (11th), Playfulness (12th)
