Waist Width: 65
The Atomic Backland UL 65 is a competition-level "ski-running" model, 65 mm wide at the waist, weighing just 680 grams, and offering almost no downhill performance whatsoever. If you dig pain and suffering, this is still your ride. The Backland Ultimate series of skis, ranging from 85 mm down to 78 mm in width, feature ultralight constructions for optimized uphill and long-distance touring. All models are tip-rockered for flotation in deep snow, with superlight caruba/poplar wood cores and carbon reinforcement. Atomic offers precut skins for all models ($170-$200). Atomic, founded in 1955, is based in Altenmarkt im Pongau, Austria (near Salzburg), where the majority of its skis are made. Along with sister brands Salomon and ArcTeryx, it is a division of Amer Sports of Finland, which acquired it in 1994. Its U.S. headquarters are in Ogden, Utah. -J.C.
