Attitash, New Hampshire: Rank 17 East, 1997

If Wildcat is the bruiser of the Mount Washington Valley, Attitash is the soother. The smallest resort in the American Skiing Co. chain, it's known for its grooming, snowmaking and wide-open blue-square cruisers. One steep-seeking reader complained: "There's too much grooming, not enough bumps."

Attitash draws a lot of families, especially with lively North Conway just 10 minutes away. The lift system is constantly being upgraded (the new Kachina triple chair joins the high-speed quad on Bear Peak) and a new beginner trail, Wandering Skis, now provides beginners with a route from the summit.

What's New The 143-room Grand Summit Hotel (completed last March); new triple chair; new beginner trail from summit.
Medals Silver Snow Quality, Grooming, Terrain
High/Low Rank Grooming (24); Expert Terrain (58)
Don't Miss Strolling the mile-long pedestrian walkway in quaint Jackson. Pop into the crafts shops, slip on a pair of ice skates and spin around the pond or stop for a drink at the Wildcat Tavern.
Reader Remarks "One of the most improved mountains in New England." "Expensive and the weather doesn't always cooperate."
