Steve Cohen 46, 200 lbs.; SKI Magazine senior contributing editor; boot-test director since 1984; founded Gold Medal test program; marketing director for MasterFit University bootfitting clinics.

Lance Cygielman 44, 180 lbs.; owner of Ski Vacation Planners in Jackson Hole, Wyo.; moved office 15 minutes closer to lifts last winter so he could squeeze in one extra tram daily.

Mark Elling 32, 165 lbs.; certified backcountry guide with Mt. Bailey (Ore.) Snowcat Skiing; author of The All-Mountain Skier (McGraw Hill); technician and bootfitter at Mt. Bachelor Ski & Sport; again led menin number of models tested.

Greg Hoffmann 45, 185 lbs.; master boot technician; owner of the Green Mountain Orthotic Lab and Performance Center at First Run Ski Shop in Stratton Mountain, Vt.; certified pedorthist; MasterFit University bootfitting instructor.

Norman Mayall 44, 140 lbs.; freelance advertising copywriter from Bend; former employee of K2 and Olin skis, where he was senior product manager and race technician.

Nicole Pelletier 29, 130 lbs.; hard-charging self-described "international woman of mystery"; former Nor-Am racer and NCSA slalom champ; freelance writer; event coordinator for Hood River, Ore., Gorge Games; also a ski tester.

Jeannie Thoren 55, 160 lbs.; president of the Jeannie Thoren Ski Equipment Clinics for Women, an instructional and equipment-familiarization program for women (see page 134); named one of the 100 Most Influential Skiers of all-time by this magazine; Skiing for Women Hall of Famer; also a ski tester.

Sure you want to be a boot tester? It’s a special breed, because testing can be an uncomfortable ordeal. But our testers are happy martyrs, since good boots are the key to every skier’s success.
