CR Johnson Package

This week, our gear of the week is based on merit AND message. As a memorial to CR Johnson, and a way to raise money for the non-profit High Fives Foundation, Smith and 4FRNT have put together a limited edition set-up.

Matt Sterbenz, of 4FRNT, said the CR’s sponsors, as well as his family, wanted a way to memorialize his love of the spot, and give skiers a way to hold on to a piece of his spirit. The package includes 4FRNT CRJ memorial skis, based on his 09/10 pro model, and a Smith CRJ memorial Maze helmet and I/O goggle. It’s only for sale through Porters Tahoe

All of the proceeds from the package go to the CRJ Memorial Fund, a part of the Tahoe-based High Fives Foundation, which will set up a scholarship in CR’s name.

“Healing is a matter of time, but sometimes also a matter of opportunity." -Dan MillmanAs I sit here thumbing through a book that C.R. once recommended to me, I flip to this quote. I feel like he could have said these words himself. The words have truth to them, a truth that C.R. instilled in me on more than one occasion. He was with me when I got hurt last season and I don't think I could have been with anyone better. He reminded me that life is good and cheered me right up as he sang along to his mediocre guitar tune and made up a song about my knee. He made me laugh often. Being in his presence, I had to stay positive. He had overcome career-ending injuries before and surpassed all expectations by coming back with vengeance and even landing a third place finish at this year’s Redbull Linecatchers event. To make a donation in C.R's name, go to

Remembering CR Johnson

Freeskier C.R. Johnson, an X Games competitor and pioneer in introducing park-and-pipe skills to the backcountry, died recently at Squaw Valley. We asked his longtime friend and fellow Squaw local Michelle Parker, also a pro freeskier, to write a tribute to C.R. Here's what she wrote. And some photos to celebrate his life.

Freeskier C.R. Johnson Passes Away

Very sad news out of Squaw Valley today: Long-time pro freeskier C.R. Johnson, a Squaw local, passed away from injuries sustained from a cliff jump. We don't have many details at the moment, but we'll report back when we do.

The Canadian mountaineer is attempting to ski two million vertical feet under his own power this year. He’s more than half way done. He broke down the vert, told us what he does to stay motivated, and gave a warning about Chilean chicken heads.
