With its slender waist and traditional camber, the featherweight TX77 is the rando race-inspired model of the new TX line. It's the lightest ski in Kastle's entire 2012-13 collection, weighing in at just 3,200 grams in the 177 cm length. Kastle's TX, or Tour Cross line is a new collection of super-light, metal-free, skin-compatible constructions designed for ease of ascent and ready for long backcountry jaunts. It's a broad line stretching from 77 to 107 mm in waist widths, encompassing rando racing at one end and freeriding at the other end. Laminate constructions are capped with an edge-to-edge layer of fiberglass. The narrower models (TX77 and TX87) are built with traditional camber; the wider two (TX97 and TX107) feature healthy doses of tip rocker. Ultra-light karuba wood is used for the cores. The Hook Free tips and tails are slightly tapered to give the TX skis a looser feel in soft snow. The Hollowtech tip is a Kastle signature: All but a thin translucent layer of glass is removed from an egg-shaped section of the tip. This reduces swing weight, and because there's less mass, tip vibration is reduced, both in amplitude and duration, so the ski is quieter on the snow and the edges are locked into the snow sooner and longer. Kastle this year increased the size of the Hollowtech oval and says it now cuts up to 15 percent from the weight of the shovel.
