The widest of Kestle's new twin-tip series is one of three Colby James West pro models. The XX110 West is a pleasant, playful addition to the great-new-ski pantheon, winning a Testers' Choice. A Utah tester called it "quick but stable" as it zipped around the hill making short-radius carves and pivoty smear turns. It logged especially high forgiveness and playfulness scores and won over even our brawniest race-bred testers. The West is "a versatile pow ski anyone will be able to enjoy." And it comes at a price tag that's more attainable than other Kastle's. Gotta love when your champagne taste and beer budget collide. Notes: The XX 110 West is designed to be the one-ski quiver for Western skiers (so the name works out nicely) but could also be an Eastern new-schoolers powder-day sk For a loose, floaty ride in soft snow and powder, it features a slightly tapered tip shape and has as much rocker as any Kastle�200 mm high, starting 400 mm back from the tip. Kastle's new XX series of twintips is built around park-and-pipe athlete Colby James West, who participated in its design. It represents Kastle's first real foray into the new-school world. There are three models--called Colby, James, and West--with waist widths of 80, 90 and 110. They're all wood-core, metal-free, vertical-sidewall laminate constructions. All have symmetrical sidecut and are center-mount-ready. Both tips on all Colby James West skis feature Hollowtech technology, which is a Kastle signature: All but a thin translucent layer of glass is removed from an egg-shaped section of the tip. This reduces swing weight, and because there's less mass, tip vibration is reduced, both in amplitude and duration, so the ski is quieter on the snow and the edges are locked into the snow sooner and longer. Kastle this year increased the size of the Hollowtech oval and says it now cuts up to 15 percent from the weight of the shovel.
