What makes you qualified to test?: Why am I qualified? To be a good tester you need to enjoy the process. A lot of runs, a lot of skis!!! You need to have a checklist in your head, tracking what the ski wants to do and how it reacts to different conditions and speeds. It's like anything else, you get better with practice.
Skiing background: Grew up in Wisconsin, moved to Alta in "92. By "97 was doing a bit of competing and working with some well known local photogs.
Favorite type of terrain: Steep, smooth, soft.... preferably near a glacier in AK.
Ideal Ski: Squad 7, Soul 7, I still have some RC 112's I can't get rid of.
Favorite part of the Skiing Mag ski test: I love ripping around with all the testers. Everybody is stoked and the pace is game on.
Funniest story from ski test (any year)?: Some guy blew up in front of me while I was skiing, he passed me like I was a gate, completely missed this roller, and went Hermann Maiier on the cover of SI. Stuffed his face into his tips, double ejected, did a rodeo 720 and slid 100 feet down the hill. It was spectacular.
What people don't know about the ski test? People are most surprised by the amount of skis we test. We usually ski 16 to 19 different skis for 5 days. It's a bit of a whirlwind!!!
Why should people trust the Skiing mag test?: Other than the great lengths taken to make the testing objective, I think the testers lend a lot of credibility to the test. Every year the same ones come back. It is a tight group with experience in this format.
